Donors Choose
During the 2008-2009 school year, the Foundation will partner with an on-line philanthropic
organization to increase funding capability for teachers in Beech Grove Schools.
www.DonorsChoose.org is a non-profit website where public school teachers describe
specific educational projects for their classrooms and individuals can choose which
projects to fund. BGEF has set up a match fund of $5000 for the 2008-2009 school year
How does it work?
At DonorsChoose.org, Beech Grove teachers can submit ideas for resources that their
students need in order to learn. Then, individuals search proposals, learn about classroom
needs, and choose which projects to fund. Teachers shop for specific materials online
using DonorChoose vendors. Once a project is funded, DonorsChoose.org ships the
materials directly to the teacher’s classroom. The teacher is also sent a disposable
camera to take pictures of the project in action, and both the teacher and the students
write short thank-you letters to the donor(s).

Who can submit proposals at DonorsChoose.org?
DonorsChoose.org invites front-line educators at public schools to submit proposals,
including teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, school nurses and coaches. These
educators must work directly with students and teach full-time. The program is not able to
accept proposals from principals, administrators, PTA members, teachers’ assistants,
student teachers, substitutes, part-time after-school teachers, or staff developers. This link
will take teachers to the page they need to use to create an account and then submit their
first project. DonorsChoose.org Create An Account
What can educators ask for?
Educators can ask for any materials that directly benefit students (art supplies, books,
technology, sports equipment, musical instruments, etc.). Proposals cannot indirectly
benefit students (e.g. professional development) or discriminate or proselytize. All
proposals are carefully screened before being posted on the site.
How much does the program fund?
The Beech Grove Education Foundation is providing a $5000 grant that will match teacher
projects up to $400. This translates into over $10,000 to Beech Grove teachers.
How many proposals can a teacher submit?
DonorsChoose.org works based on a points system: first-time users begin with 3 points,
which allows them to submit up to 3 proposals at one time. As teachers earn points, they
can submit more proposals, as well as different types of proposals (i.e. fieldtrips and class
visitors).
Does it work?
Absolutely! Since 2000, DonorsChoose.org has delivered more than $20 million in
resources to more than one million students across the country.
What is the cost to districts and teachers?
Nothing! DonorsChoose.org does not charge teachers or districts any fee to use
DonorsChoose.org. We just ask that you thank our donors, and that you help us spread the
word!
How are administrators kept informed?
When a teacher’s proposal is fully funded, an email or fax will be sent to the principal. This
helps to notify the principal about the proposal and verifies that the materials will be
shipped to the school.
